It being a holiday and all, I decided to pop in DVDs of Star Wars Trilogy. In a sense, it's a classic and it has been also quite a while since I last watched them.
The entire movie is suppose to be futuristic (with the setting and technology) but watching it circa 2006, it strangely has a rather retro vibe. Maybe that's just nostalgia talking. The settings, of course, are stunning, especially the CGI-ed version. Mr. Lucas' imagination just amazes me, really. To dream of such places, to create such worlds... It's a gift not to be limited by what the world sets before us.
Yet the setting serves only as a backdrop. It is the story that draws us in --that familiarity of the plot in this strange world allows us to connect with the movie. Funny (for the lack of a better term) how the Savior story is so dominant in this futuristic film. It feels like some modern day mythology, where instead of gods and goddesses, we have Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Obi Wan Kenobi and Yoda taking on the roles. Other movies with this savior/the chosen one theme would be Superman, Lord of the Rings, and more recently, the Matrix. The theme remains, only the context changes.
